Lens breathing is the apparent change in image size or field of view that occurs when a lens changes focus. In stop motion it becomes especially important during programmed focus pulls and close-focus miniature photography, because a small optical framing change can play back as an unintended zoom across a shot that was otherwise designed to be mechanically repeatable.
Overview
Focus breathing is not a software defect and it is not the same thing as the camera physically moving. It is a property of the optical design: as focus changes, the lens can change magnification enough that the edges of the frame appear to expand or contract. Cinema-lens manufacturers therefore treat breathing as a design characteristic. ARRI, for example, markets its Signature Primes around the absence of visible focus breathing, while Cooke notes that breathing can become more pronounced in macro work and must be controlled deliberately. That matters directly to stop motion because miniature work so often lives near the close-focus end of a lens.
Laura Howie's account of Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires turns the general optical issue into a concrete production constraint. The feature was running many animation units simultaneously, so it was not economically realistic to equip every set with a full package of cinema lenses; the production often used still-photo lenses instead. Howie notes that their breathing then had to become part of the chosen look, be hidden inside a camera move, or be corrected in post. The important lesson is not that stills lenses are unsuitable for stop motion. It is that breathing must be tested at the focus distances the production will actually use.
The effect is easiest to miss during still-frame setup. If the first and last focus positions are examined separately, both can look perfectly composed. Played as a sequence, however, the changing magnification can make walls pulse, foreground objects slide against frame edges or a puppet appear to change scale while remaining physically still. When the camera is also travelling on motion control, the breathing becomes mixed with genuine perspective change, which can make diagnosis and correction harder.
Breathing can also be a creative characteristic rather than something that must always be removed. Some cine lenses are designed to minimise it; other lens families retain optical changes that cinematographers accept as part of their rendering. The correct stop-motion workflow is therefore to decide whether the effect belongs to the film, document it before the shot, and avoid discovering it after days of animation.
Workflow
- Build a lens test at the actual miniature working distance and framing. Place fixed reference marks near the edges of frame so magnification changes are easy to see.
- Record the closest and farthest focus positions required by the shot, then animate or motor the complete focus pull at the intended timing.
- Play the focus pull as motion, not as isolated stills. Measure whether fixed background features change size or drift relative to the frame.
- Test the focus pull together with any motion-control move. Determine whether the breathing is visually masked by the movement, compounds it, or creates an unacceptable counter-movement.
- Choose the treatment before animation: accept it as part of the lens character, select a lower-breathing lens, alter the focus strategy, hide the change within movement, or plan a post-production correction.
- Record the lens, focus endpoints and treatment decision in the shot metadata so reshoots and parallel units reproduce the same optical behaviour.
