Definition
Depth of field in miniature cinematography is the controlled range of distance that appears acceptably sharp when photographing puppets and sets at close working distances. Because the subjects are small and the camera is often close, focus tolerance can become extremely narrow; aperture, camera distance, lens choice and the animator's ability to hit marks therefore have to be planned as one production decision.
Overview
Depth of field is often discussed as though stop-motion cinematographers should simply maximise it so that miniatures do not look small. That is too blunt. Deep focus can help a miniature world read clearly, but selective focus is also part of cinema's visual language. The real decision is what degree of focus falloff belongs to the film, and whether the production can animate reliably inside that tolerance. Laura Howie identifies reduced depth of field and pre-planned focus pulls as direct consequences of working at puppet scale, where the camera package may be as large as the subject and retakes after a missed focus mark are expensive.
Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires provides a rare production-specific example with a stated photographic target. Howie kept the film relatively shallow in focus because the visual concept was to evoke 35 mm anamorphic action cinema. She used f/8 as a working stop when possible because it gave the scaled depth-of-field character she wanted. That was unusual for animation, where crews often seek more depth to avoid a model-like appearance, and it was not an absolute rule: when a programmed focus pull would constrain an animator too severely, the production sometimes gave the shot more depth so the performance had a safer working range.
This trade-off is what makes depth of field a stop-motion workflow issue rather than an optics lesson alone. A live-action focus puller can react continuously to an actor; in stop motion, focus may be programmed or advanced in discrete increments while the animator works over days. A focus target that looks precise in a still test can become fragile when the puppet leans forward, a replacement face sits fractionally differently, or the animator needs to adjust performance. The camera department therefore needs to know not only the desired plane of focus but the permissible volume around it.
Scale should be judged from the moving image, not from a formula in isolation. Camera height, perspective, texture, lighting and motion parallax can make a miniature feel inhabited even when focus is shallow; conversely, deep focus does not rescue a shot whose camera position announces a tabletop. Treat aperture as one part of a scale strategy, test it at the real lens-to-puppet distance, and choose the narrowest focus tolerance that the animation can actually hold consistently.
Workflow
- Test depth of field with the actual camera, lens, sensor crop, puppet scale and final working distance. Do not extrapolate from a full-scale camera test.
- Choose the visual target first: deep descriptive focus, selective focus, or a specific live-action reference. Record the intended aperture and focus distance as part of the shot setup.
- Block the puppet's full movement through depth and mark the closest and farthest critical positions. Include replacement faces, props and any camera movement that changes working distance.
- Program or chart focus changes before animation. Rehearse them with the motion-control move if the camera is moving, and check whether the focus transition changes the animator's usable performance volume.
- If the focus tolerance is too restrictive, decide deliberately whether to stop down, change camera distance or lens, simplify the move, or accept a different focus aesthetic. Do not wait for a missed mark mid-shot to make that decision.
- Review the test at playback speed. Judge scale, focus falloff and motion together rather than judging a single frame at 100 percent magnification.
