Definition

The materials layered over a puppet's armature and core to give it a finished outer body -- usually not a single substance but a combination, most often a cast resin or foam-latex core dressed with a silicone (or, on some builds, foam-latex) outer skin, chosen for a trade-off between paintable smoothness, weight, and how well the surface survives being posed by hand thousands of times.

Overview

Skin is the outermost of the several material layers documented on Puppet: armature, body padding, then a surface skin, then paint and costume. The skin layer alone is rarely one substance. Productions combine a structural core material -- typically a cast resin or foam latex -- with a silicone outer skin dressed over it, because no single material satisfies every requirement at once: silicone casts with a smooth, semi-translucent surface close to real skin and holds fine sculpted detail through repeated molding, while foam latex is far lighter and easier to repair when a hero puppet is being posed by hand for months on end. Choosing where each material sits on the puppet -- core versus outer layer, static face versus mechanical face -- is a durability and performance decision as much as a look decision.

LAIKA's ParaNorman (2012) is a sourced example of a production combining several skin materials on the same character set rather than standardizing on one. The studio's own production notes describe the full build plainly: "All of our puppets are made up of silicone and foam latex and resin, and then inside they have their metal" (Focus Features production notes, 2012). The zombie characters push the skin material further: their faces are mechanical rather than hand-sculpted, built from rubber and silicone over internal clockwork gears that drive small, repeatable expression changes -- a case where the skin material has to flex cleanly around a moving mechanism (see Mechanical puppet) without cracking or losing paint across a feature-length shoot.

Aardman's Early Man (2018) documents the same core-plus-skin approach at a different studio. Animation Supervisor Merlin Crossingham described the standard build: "The team fleshes the armatures out either with a resin or other core over which a silicone skin is dressed. Sometimes a foam latex body is cast" (VFX Voice, 2018). Crossingham ties the material choice to production scale: "These methods require very accurate molds to be made from the master sculpts so that details are maintained and that multiple puppets can be built" -- the same mold has to reproduce a consistent skin surface across every duplicate hero puppet a feature needs to survive handling and breakage. Early Man's faces, by contrast, are sculpted directly in modeling clay rather than cast in silicone or foam latex (see Clay animation), showing that the skin-material choice is made zone by zone on a single puppet, not once for the whole build.

Workflow

  1. Sculpt and mold the master puppet form, since an accurate mold is what lets the same skin surface be reproduced across every duplicate hero puppet a production needs.
  2. Cast a structural core -- typically resin or foam latex -- inside the mold, fitted around the armature documented on Armature.
  3. Dress a silicone outer skin over the core (or, on some builds, cast the visible surface in foam latex directly), choosing the material by where on the puppet it sits: a static body favors casting fidelity and paintability, a mechanical face favors a skin that flexes cleanly around moving parts.
  4. Paint and finish the skin surface, then repair or replace it as needed through a shoot that poses the puppet by hand thousands of times.
