Stop motion
Definition
A sub-type of stop motion in which articulated puppet figures — typically built over a poseable armature — are moved incrementally between individually photographed frames. Puppet animation is defined by its subject (an engineered, reposeable figure) rather than by any difference in the frame-by-frame capture method shared with all other stop-motion sub-types. The category spans wire-armature figures built for student films through the precision ball-and-socket assemblies of LAIKA feature productions and the hand-carved wooden puppets of dwarf's Hidari (2026).
Overview
Puppet animation spans the widest technical range of any stop-motion sub-type. What all puppet figures share is an engineering intention: each is designed from the outset to hold a pose between frames, to be repositioned precisely, and to survive the hundreds of incremental adjustments a scene requires without losing structural integrity or surface finish. The capture method is identical to every other stop-motion sub-type — frame-by-frame photography of a physical subject — but the subject is a purpose-built poseable figure rather than a clay mass, a found object, or a live actor.
The armature is the defining structural element. In its simplest form, twisted aluminium or steel wire serves as both skeleton and joint; in professional feature production, machined ball-and-socket joints replace wire. Each joint can be tightened to a calibrated resistance that holds a pose against gravity without additional support while still yielding to light animator hand pressure. Foot plates with threaded tie-down points anchor the figure securely to the set floor between exposures, preventing drift. Mackinnon & Saunders, a UK fabrication studio, has supplied ball-and-socket armatures for productions including Corpse Bride (2005), Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) and Anomalisa (2015).
The surface built over the armature has shifted considerably over the history of the form. Early European puppet animation used carved or turned wooden components and wire-and-fabric bodies. From the 1950s onward, latex foam over a wire skeleton became the production standard for character puppets at studios including the BBC Film Animation Department and the early Aardman Animations. Modern feature production uses silicone skin: it allows micro-detail surface sculpting, does not yellow or harden under sustained studio lighting, and can be colour-pigmented internally so that minor surface damage does not expose an obvious paint boundary. LAIKA extended puppet construction further by integrating 3D-printed resin replacement faces with silicone puppet bodies, giving animators per-frame expression control while maintaining a stable continuous figure.
Puppet animation encompasses rich national traditions that predate the contemporary feature form. In Czechoslovakia, Jiri Trnka elevated the puppet film to an internationally recognised art form with works including Spalicek (1947) and A Midsummer Night's Dream (1959), establishing a craft lineage at Bratri v triku that has continued for decades. In Japan, Tadahito Mochinaga — who trained in Manchuria before returning after World War II — established puppet animation as a professional discipline and later directed for Rankin/Bass Productions on American television specials including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964). The Soviet Soyuzmultfilm studio maintained a prolific puppet department from the 1930s onward under directors including Yevgeny Migounov.
The contemporary feature standard — in which a full puppet cast is engineered to meet the physical and lighting demands of a theatrical release — was established at Aardman Animations and scaled into an industrial model by LAIKA beginning with Coraline (2009). Hidari (in development, 2026), directed by Masashi Kawamura and co-produced by dwarf and Whatever (Japan), marks a distinctive extension of the tradition: characters are hand-carved from wood, making the grain and chisel marks of the material directly visible on screen. Kawamura has described the aesthetic as 'Wood Punk' and noted that 'the material and the technique become part of the story itself' — connecting the making of the film to its subject, a legendary Japanese carpenter.
