Definition
Digital previsualization, in a stop-motion context, is the practice of modelling a set, camera move, or rig entirely in software -- typically CAD or a 3D package such as Blender -- before a single physical piece is built, so that scale, camera choreography, and rig clearance are proven on screen while changes are still cheap. It sits between the animatic (which locks story timing in 2D) and fabrication (which is expensive and slow to alter), and it exists specifically because stop motion cannot absorb the same late changes that CG or live-action production can.
Overview
An animatic tells a stop-motion crew what has to happen in a shot; it does not tell them whether a 1:500 scale model will physically fit a motion-control rig, or whether a turntable can complete a full rotation in the number of frames the shot allows. That gap is where digital previsualization sits: a 3D model of the set, puppet, and camera path, built and reviewed digitally before fabrication starts, so that scale, blocking, and rig geometry are proven before wood, foam, or 3D-printed parts are committed.
London studio Scale Model Studios treats this as a standing stage of its pipeline rather than an occasional extra step. Director Jennifer Kidd describes using CAD and Blender to "create pre-visuals before production begins, allowing for more effective scheduling and providing clients with a clearer vision of the final product" -- because, as she puts it, "any changes during production can significantly impact both the budget and timeline" once a physical model exists. The studio's 2026 preview film for Bristol's Aviva Arena is a worked example of what that buys: a continuous, single-take motion-control shot that rotates a 1:500 architectural scale model on a millimetre-divided turntable, synchronized so the camera travels from bare structure to finished venue in one pass. A move that precise -- calculating turn and timing against the motion-control rig well enough to complete it in one take -- is far cheaper to rehearse and adjust as a digital previs than to discover as a mistake mid-shoot on a hand-built miniature.
The underlying logic generalizes beyond architectural visualization work: any shot whose camera move, rig clearance, or set scale is the risk (rather than the performance) benefits from being proven digitally first. This is a different problem from the animatic's -- previs here is about physical and mechanical feasibility, not story pacing -- which is why the two belong to the same production stage but do different jobs, and a studio may use both a 2D animatic and a 3D digital previs on the same production.
Workflow
- 1. Lock the shot's story beat and rough timing in the animatic first. Previsualization answers "can we build and shoot this," not "should this happen."
- 2. Model the set, puppet placement, and camera path in CAD or a 3D package (e.g. Blender) at the real production scale, not a simplified proxy scale.
- 3. Simulate any rig that adds mechanical complexity -- a motion-control move, a synchronized turntable, a flying rig -- and confirm it completes within the intended frame count and physical range of motion.
- 4. Review the previs with the client or director before fabrication begins; this is the cheap point to change scale, blocking, or a rig's design.
- 5. Carry the proven camera path and rig parameters forward as the fabrication and rigging brief, so the physical build is built to a already-validated plan rather than discovering constraints during the shoot.
