Definition

An exposure sheet (X-sheet, or dope sheet) is a grid-format planning and record-keeping tool used by animators to map the timing of a scene before and during shooting. Each row corresponds to one frame of finished film; columns record the puppet's position or hold state, camera and lighting instructions, and dialogue-track phoneme cues. In stop motion, the X-sheet is the animator's primary guide for translating a performance plan into a frame-by-frame session.

Overview

The exposure sheet began as a physical object: a preprinted paper form, typically A4 or letter size, with columns for frame number, character track, dialogue phonemes, and camera instructions. In 2D cel animation it was the primary tool for synchronising mouth shapes to recorded dialogue, planning movement cycles, and communicating intentions to the camera operator. Stop motion adopted the form and changed what the columns record: instead of cel layers to be composited, the animator tracks puppet positions, hold durations, face-change cues, and the frame numbers at which camera or lighting instructions take effect.

A row on a stop-motion X-sheet corresponds to one frame of finished film. Because many stop-motion shots are animated on-twos, meaning one unique puppet position photographed twice for 12 positions per second of 24fps film, the sheet often shows the frame number in the first column and a position number in the second: position 1 covers frames 1-2, position 2 covers frames 3-4, and so on. When a section is shot on-ones for fast action or a precisely timed impact, one position per row. Holds, frames where the puppet is static and the same exposure is repeated, are marked explicitly, often with a downward arrow or a bracketed range, so the animator knows to stand still while the camera keeps shooting.

Dialogue is the most demanding use of the sheet. Before the shoot the animator marks phoneme cues from the recorded audio track onto the relevant frame rows, a process called track reading. An MM entry at frame 12 means a closed-mouth shape is required; an AH at frame 14 means the mouth is fully open. These marks come either from a manual track-reading session, in which the audio is played back slowly and phonemes are logged by ear, or from waveform analysis software. The sheet turns the audio performance into a physical instruction: which face part to snap onto the backing plate in replacement-face work, or how wide to push the clay mouth in direct manipulation.

The digital sheet can display audio waveforms alongside frame numbers, show which face-set parts are assigned to each frame in a replacement-face workflow, and accept freehand sketches or text reminders in any cell. The completed sheet is printable and is commonly taped to the side of the set as an at-a-glance reference during the session, a practice that persists even in fully digital studios because a laminated sheet on the set frame does not require a monitor to read.

Workflow

  1. Receive the recorded dialogue track and play it back at reduced speed: quarter-speed or frame-by-frame in audio editing software. For each frame, mark the dominant phoneme or mouth shape in the dialogue column. This is called track reading.
  2. Transfer the scene timing from the animatic: count frames between key actions, note the in-point and out-point of each movement, and mark holds where the puppet or camera is static.
  3. Number each unique puppet position down the position column. If shooting on-twos, each position number spans two frame rows; on-ones, each position occupies a single row.
  4. Add camera and lighting instructions in the appropriate columns: pan start and end frames, focus-pull cues, zoom increments for motion-control moves, lighting cue numbers.
  5. Bring the printed or on-screen sheet to the set. Before each exposure, check the current frame row: confirm the correct face part or puppet position, and act on any camera or lighting instruction for that frame.
  6. After shooting, mark each completed frame row so the session can be resumed without ambiguity. If using Dragonframe's digital X-sheet, the software tracks frame completion automatically; cross-reference against the paper copy if one was used.
