The DDMX-512 is Dragonframe's hardware interface for the DMX-512 lighting-control protocol: a USB-to-DMX bridge that lets the capture software drive up to 512 lighting channels as keyframed values on the same frame-accurate timeline it uses for the camera, enabling automated light changes, multi-pass lighting, and external-device triggers that would otherwise require a crew member to re-light the set by hand between exposures.
Overview
DMX-512 is the entertainment industry's standard protocol for remotely controlling stage lighting: a single data line carries up to 512 independently addressable channels, each typically driving one dimmer, one fixture, or one parameter of a more complex light. The DDMX-512 is DZED Systems' interface device for bringing that protocol into a Dragonframe capture rig: it connects to the capture computer over USB and to the lighting rig over a DMX line (a 3-pin XLR connector as standard, adaptable to the 5-pin XLR used by professional entertainment-grade DMX gear via a passive adapter), and its outputs are optically isolated from the host USB bus so a badly grounded lighting rig cannot damage the computer running the shoot. It replaced the older DDMX-S2, expanding addressable channels from 99 to the full 512 -- though reaching all 512 requires Dragonframe 4 or later; Dragonframe 3 remains capped at 99.
Inside Dragonframe, the DDMX-512 turns lighting into something the software can key to the exposure timeline the same way it keys camera moves: a light level becomes a keyframed value tied to a specific frame or exposure rather than a manual adjustment the crew makes by hand between shots. Dragonframe's documented uses for the device include bashed on/off control of a work light, keyframed lighting programs that ramp or cut levels across a run of frames for effects such as a flickering fire or a sunrise, and multi-pass lighting where the same frame is captured more than once under different light setups -- front-light and back-light passes shot in immediate succession, for example -- with the device also able to trigger external gear (a second camera, a film camera, or a motion-control system) in sync with the lighting change.
The clearest catalogued example of this multi-pass capability is not a lighting effect at all: on The Girl Who Cried Pearls (2025), the National Film Board of Canada's animation department paired a DDMX-512-driven UV light with Dragonframe's multi-exposure feature to solve a face-tracking problem (see UV-ink tracking for CG face replacement). Every frame was shot twice -- once under the crew's normal set lighting for the final image, once under the DMX-triggered UV light to reveal invisible-ink tracking marks -- with both exposures locked to the same frame automatically. The lighting device did the same job a gaffer's cue sheet does on a live-action set, except the cue fired on every single frame of an animated performance rather than once per shot.
Workflow
- Connect the DDMX-512 to the capture computer over USB, then run a DMX line from the device to the lighting rig -- a 3-pin XLR cable as standard, or a 3-to-5-pin adapter for professional USITT-standard DMX fixtures and dimmer packs.
- In Dragonframe, assign each fixture or dimmer channel a DMX address so the software can address it individually; a rig with several practical lights or a multi-zone dimmer pack may use anywhere from a handful of channels up to the device's 512-channel ceiling (99 on Dragonframe 3).
- Set light levels as keyframed values on the animation timeline exactly as a camera move or focus pull would be keyframed, so a level change lands on a specific frame rather than requiring a manual adjustment between exposures.
- For a multi-pass shot -- front/back lighting, or a tracking pass like the UV-ink technique -- program a second lighting state and pair it with Dragonframe's multi-exposure capture so both passes fire automatically at every frame, without the crew re-lighting the set by hand between exposures.
