Annecy 2026 full competition results: The Violinist wins Cristal; no stop-motion in main prizes as Brothers Quay Honorary Cristal marks cultural peak

The 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival (50th edition; June 21–27) closed on June 27 with competition results confirming no stop-motion films in the main competition prizes. Feature Film Cristal: The Violinist (2D hand-drawn; Singapore/Spain/Italy; dirs. Ervin Han and Raúl García; Robot Playground Media). Short Film Cristal: Paper Trail (Don Hertzfeldt; USA; 2D drawn with animated objects). Jury Award features: Iron Boy (2D hand-drawn; France/Belgium; dir. Louis Clichy) and A New Dawn (Japan/France; Miyu Productions). Stop-motion's festival high point was the Honorary Cristal Lifetime Achievement to the Brothers Quay (Stephen and Timothy), explicitly cited for revolutionising stop motion animation in the 1980s and inspiring a revival of the medium; their 1986 Street of Crocodiles is the jury's named reference point. Travis Knight's Wildwood screened in the LAIKA Annecy showcase; Aardman's 50th anniversary masterclass dominated studio programming. The 50th edition established stop-motion as a culturally prominent medium even as competitive prizes this cycle went to drawn and digitally-animated works — a pattern worth tracking to judge whether Wildwood (eligible 2027) changes the competition landscape.
