Annecy 2026 closes: Brothers Quay Honorary Cristal and stop-motion as central festival theme

The 50th Annecy International Animation Film Festival (June 21-27 2026) made stop-motion animation a central theme. (1) Brothers Quay (Stephen and Timothy Quay) received Honorary Cristal Lifetime Achievement Awards; the jury noted a revival of stop-motion animation and credited the Quays with having revolutionized the art in the 1980s through their surrealist object-animation films built from found objects, doll parts and scavenged materials. Their 1986 short Street of Crocodiles remains the defining work of this tradition. (2) Aardman Animations celebrated its 50th anniversary with a major festival masterclass. (3) LAIKA director Travis Knight presented Wildwood footage at Annecy and called stop-motion production a quiet act of rebellion, framing the medium's labour-intensive physicality as a counter-signal to generative AI. (4) Mike Judge also received a second Honorary Cristal at the ceremony. The festival's stop-motion focus, including the Brothers Quay tribute and LAIKA showcase, marks the 50th edition as a landmark for the craft. Durable technique knowledge from Brothers Quay practice folded into the object-animation wiki concept.
